Preparing your Evaporative Cooler for Winter Storage

As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin changing color, it will soon be time to stow your evaporative cooler for the off-season. We recommend following a few “end of season” steps to remove any dirt, dust and residue that may have accumulated over the summer. Following these simple steps to clean the inside of your evaporative cooler will ensure you keep your Portacool in tip-top shape for next summer usage.

Step 1: Unplug your portable evaporative cooler. Empty the water out of the reservoir by unscrewing the drain located at the bottom or back of your product.

Step 2: Once the water is drained, the Kuul Comfort™ evaporative media (has a brown honeycomb design and is located in Preparing your Evaporative Cooler for Winter Storagethe back of the cooler) can be removed to allow cleaning of the tank. To access this area, you’ll need a Philips head screwdriver. If you have a taller model such as the Jetstream 250, 260 or 270 – you may need a ladder as well. Proceed by removing the screws from the media flap on the top of the evaporative cooler and sliding the media out. You may want to review this video to see exactly how this is done.

Step 3: Once the evaporative media is removed, rinse out and thoroughly wipe clean the inside of the reservoir. Make sure it is dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Replace the Kuul Comfort evaporative media, ensuring it is placed with the directional stickers pointing in the correct direction, and secure the media flap with its respective screws that were removed.

Step 5: Consider covering your Portacool for storage. Protective covers prevent dust build-up and increase the life of your Kuul Comfort evaporative media. Protective covers designed specifically for your Portacool evaporative cooler are available from Portacool online at shop.portacool.com or from your distributor.Portacool Evaporative Cooler Cover

Step 6: Secure the electrical cord to avoid any tripping hazards, roll to the dry area where you will store your cooler and lock the caster wheels.

Voila – now you’re set for off-season storage and will be ready to use your cooler when the mercury rises next year!
